The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art was founded by inventor, industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper under the principle that education was vital for civic virtue and harmony in addition to personal wealth. Abraham Lincoln would later consider an address he gave at the college's Great Hall, known as his "right makes might" address, as a major reason he won the presidential election.
