Chartered in 1793, Williams was the twenty-first institution of higher learning in the former British colonies and the second in Massachusetts. Purple was chosen as the college's color when, in 1865, the College's baseball team was leaving for Cambridge to play against Harvard, which had chosen its own color (magenta at the time). Two female supporters of the Williams team hurried to find royal purple ribbon to give to their own players and, the day after Williams won, royal purple flew from the campus masthead. Williams was named the #1 National Liberal Arts College by U.S. News & World Report.
